BRCF Awards $5,000 to the Camrose Women's Shelter Society

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. Battle River Community Foundation Treasurer Neil Lunty presents the cheque to Jan T., Outreach and Youth Care Advocate, and Nora-Lee Rear, Executive Director, both of the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society.

Nora-Lee Rear explained, “This grant supports the Outreach Child and Youth Care Advocate program and our shelter Child Care program to try to make good things happen for kids affected by domestic violence and abuse.”

“The last couple of years have been really difficult on kids, but when a child lives in a house where abuse exists, it creates trauma.” Said Rear. Further, “The grant helps us provide group and one-to-one time with children, education, information, and support around the long-term effects of family violence on children for parents. The program also helps create a semi normal atmosphere for kids during a very traumatic time in their lives.”

The grant is from the Foundation’s Community Funds along with the Darryl and Dyann Schultz Family Fund, the Jack and Lily Kirschman Fund, and the Vivianne Tremblay Grue Fund, which have been established as Field of Interest Funds supporting women’s safety, children at risk, and victims of domestic violence.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds.  The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $8,216,000 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.
