About Donating

Types of Funds

How you can be part of the Foundation?

Donor support helps the Foundation build a strong, long term future for the communities it serves. Many donors express their satisfaction with supporting an organization that will be there for the benefit of local communities in perpetuity and is flexible enough to meet evolving needs.

Why Do People Establish Endowment Funds?

  • It's a gift that keeps on giving.
  • The capital is preserved, with grants made from income
  • It's a way to give something back to the community
  • Named funds will perpetuate a family name
  • Funds may be named to honour the memory of family members or friends
  • There are tax advantages - donations are eligible for tax credits

Can Donors Choose What They Want To Support?

There is flexibility for donors to determine how income from their funds will be granted. There are four main types of funds:

  • Community Fund: unrestricted, for the greatest need at the time
  • Field of Interest Funds: focused on a general area, such as youth, health, recreation, or a specific community
  • Designated Funds: for a specific organization or a scholarship
  • Donor-advised: donors may suggest each year which organization(s) will benefit
  • There are also Administration Endowment Funds which help cover the Community Foundation's operational costs

Named Funds:
Donors may name their Funds or designate the income from them for a specific purpose or agency if their total contribution is $10,000 or more ($20,000 for donor-advised funds). It is possible to create an Emerging Fund with a commitment to reach this level over a period up to ten years.

Ways To Give: There are many ways to make a lasting gift. These include gifts of cash, a bequest in a will, life insurance, securities, charitable remainder trust, or property. There may be tax implications to discuss with your advisors.
